FOrensicsDaniel Hellwig comes to the Cold Case Foundation from Sorenson Forensics where he served as Laboratory Director with more than a decade of forensic science DNA experience. Mr. Hellwig holds a Masters of Science degree in forensic science (Marshall University) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry (Viterbo University). Mr. Hellwig has been qualified as an expert in Forensic Serology/DNA Analysis in the states of Utah, New Mexico and Texas. He holds several certifications to include: FBI DNA QAS Auditor, ASCLD/LAB-International Assessor and Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt.
In 2002, Mr. Hellwig began his forensic science career in the mtDNA section of the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory. He has also served as a Forensic Scientist in Serology/DNA in two public crime |
laboratories, New Mexico Department of Public Safety (Santa Fe, NM) and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (Bemidji, MN). Mr. Hellwig has also provided instruction to the Forensic Science community in educational, law enforcement, legal and forensic laboratory classroom settings, including a position as professor in the Chemistry Department at New Mexico Highland University in Las Vegas, New Mexico assisting with the creation of a FEPAC accredited Forensic Science program.
Mr. Hellwig has extensive Lean Six Sigma project experience since obtaining Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt Certification in 2009 and his Black Belt in 2013. He was the primary project leader in the initial process-wide Lean/Six Sigma project undertaken by Sorenson Forensics June-October 2009. Upon completion, this project was responsible for a more than doubling (~120%) the forensic casework capacity of the laboratory. Since that initial project, Mr. Hellwig has led or been a part of four more Lean/Six Sigma projects within Sorenson Forensics and is committed to maintaining the laboratory’s focus on continuous improvement.
Under the leadership of Mr. Hellwig, Sorenson Forensics grew to become the second largest private forensic DNA testing laboratory in the United States; successfully completed the two largest casework contracts in company history. He also increased casework output from ~200 to ~1600 cases/month in a rapid growth phase, Additionally Mr. Hellwig oversaw the development of revenue growth from ~$2M to ~$12M/year.
