David HornungDavid Hornung is an extremely experienced law enforcement officer both federally, with the United States Coast Guard in numerous locations and the Gila County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona. While on active duty with the Coast Guard, David participated in hundreds of maritime law enforcement vessel boardings, enforcing all applicable federal law including boating safety, immigration and drug interdiction. He was instrumental in one of the largest drug seizures in the eastern Pacific. He assisted in the planning and participated in several presidential security operations, working with the Secret Service, FBI and Department of Justice.

After retiring from the Coast Guard in 2000, David became a wildland firefighter with the United States Forest Service, working up from firefighter to assistant engine supervisor. He assisted nearly 100 wildfires in a total of three western states.
David graduated from the Central Arizona Regional Law Officers Academy in 2004 as the Outstanding Cadet. His first assignment was in a rural isolated community, being the only law enforcement officer within 60 miles. In 2009, David was selected as the Officer of the Year 2008-2009 by the Payson Area Elks Lodge. At the end of 2009, he was assigned to patrol duties in Payson, Arizona, where he became a field training officer.
In 2010, he was promoted to sergeant and was assigned to the marine patrol on Roosevelt Lake. While assigned to lake David conducted numerous search and rescue cases, boating accidents and area law enforcement. He was also a boat operator instructor.
After a year at the lake, David was assigned back to Payson as a patrol sergeant. He supervised 4-5 deputies in all aspects of law enforcement including, patrol, scheduling, case management, training and personnel supervision. He became the Field Training Supervisor and assisted in training nearly a dozen new officers.
In 2016, David was selected to be one of the agencies Threat Liaison Officers with the Arizona Counterterrorist Information Center. He assisted ACTIC with all possible acts of terrorism or violent acts against officers. He assisted in threat assessments of many of the public and county buildings in Gila County.
In 2017, David was selected to become the Criminal Investigations Sergeant, supervising up to five detectives. He conducted or supervised cases involving missing persons, sex crimes, crimes against children, property crimes, suicides homicides and death investigations.
One of David’s first duties was to review all cold cases within the department. There were seven missing persons/homicides cases in the departmental files. This required extensive review of each case, location of all documentation and evidence, review evidence for possible further testing and interviewing family and friends of the victims. David conducted new investigations with two cold cases, while handling his own share of cases, sometimes totaling 10 at a time.
After being assigned to the criminal investigation bureau, David began instruction into crime scene management, homicide investigation procedures and death investigations. David streamline the investigation training and worked on creating a teamwork concept in major crime investigation. He also became a certified fire investigator through the Arizona Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He is a member of the Arizona Homicide Investigators Association. He is also a Basic Wildland Fire Investigator, through the U.S. Forest Service.
David has experience in Marine Patrol and Supervision, including marine accident investigation and boat operation instructor. He has attended numerous statement analysis training courses and Reid Interview and Interrogation. He is an experienced public affairs officer and has been involved in basic and advance incident command.
