Diane ShafterDiane Shafter graduated from Weber State University with two Bachelor’s of Science degrees, Criminal Justice and History. She began her career in forensics at the Salt Lake City Police Department in 2004. After three years of handling crime scenes and entering fingerprints into the AFIS system, she was asked to train as a footwear/tire examiner. In September 2012 she was asked to work with the Utah Bureau of Forensic Services in order to verify the footwear/tire cases being conducted by their examiner. She completed their training course, which consisted of approximately 400 hours of reading, research papers, competency tests, and proficiency

tests in order to be considered trained to ASCLAD standards. In 2013 she tested with the International Association for Identification in the discipline of footwear and passed, becoming one of two certified footwear examiners in the state of Utah. She is also certified with the International Association for Identification as a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst in 2016.
In 2018 she began working at West Valley City Police Department as a Forensic Investigator II. She began doing fingerprint comparisons for the city and after reaching the qualifications required by the International Association for Identification, she will test to become certified as a Latent Print Examiner in June of 2020. In her first year and a half of working at the West Valley City Police Department, she has been asked to re-evaluate an open cold case homicide with her other co-workers. She has also been awarded the Meritorious Service Award (2019), Distinguished Service Award (2019) and the Civilian of the Year Award in 2019.
Diane has taught at Utah Valley University’s Forensics Department from 2016-2018 a footwear/tire course and a crime scene course. She has taught numerous courses at forensic conventions throughout the years as well as private workshops for individual police departments in Utah as well as in Idaho. In 2018 she opened her own business, Shafter Forensics, to handle any out of state footwear cases that she has been asked to handle. In 2018 she became the only working certified footwear examiner in the state of Utah and now handles all footwear/tire cases across for the entire state of Utah. She has testified as an expert in footwear cases across the state of Utah.
