Robert A. RisenBob began his law enforcement career in 1974 as a reserve deputy sheriff with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office while a student at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC from which he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in Sociology..
He worked for the High Point Police Department from December 1976 until October 1983. He served as a patrol officer, vice/narcotic detective, SWAT member, and crime prevention officer. He received the State’s Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. From October 1983 until October 1985, he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, first as a Special Agent with the Office of Security in Los Angeles and then as an Intelligence Officer in the Clandestine Service. |
In October 1985, Bob began working as a Special Agent for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, working primarily drug cases. He also conducted a variety of complex investigations including officer-involved shootings, homicides, public corruption cases, embezzlements, and background investigations. He was assigned to the Violent Career Criminal Task Force working with the FBI and ATF. He was certified by the DEA as a clandestine laboratory investigator and assigned to the SBI’s Clandestine Laboratory Response Team. He was sworn as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal while working Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force cases with the DEA and IRS. In 2004, he was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge and supervised drug investigations in 13 counties. Bob was also sworn as a Special Federal Officer and assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in the FBI’s Charlotte Division from April 2004 until March 2008 when he retired from the SBI.
While with the SBI, Bob was nominated by the SBI for the Parade Magazine/IACP “Officer of the Year” award in 1987. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 2004 and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the Governor of North Carolina in 2008. He also received numerous commendations from the FBI, United States Attorney’s Office, SBI, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, police chiefs and sheriffs.
Upon his retirement from the SBI, Bob began working as a part-time detective with the Yadkinville Police Department where he still serves.
In April 2008, Bob began working as a Special Investigator with the Hartford Insurance Company’s Special Investigations Unit investigating suspected fraudulent claims and special investigations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. He served on the board of directors for the North Carolina Crime Information Exchange. He retired from The Hartford in 2016.
In December 2016, Bob returned to the SBI as a Special Investigator working cold cases with the SBI’s Cold Case Investigation Team. He received the Director’s Award for Excellence in 2022.
Bob is a member of the North Carolina Homicide Investigator’s Association and the Mid-Atlantic Cold Case Homicide Investigator’s Association.
